Shanghaied on the Willamette

I met Jonathan Lay in the early’90’s when we performed as part of a Work Songs of the Sea concert. We discovered we had an interest in sea chanteys and songs of the sea, so we began performing as Shanghaied on the Willamette in 1993. (Shanghaiing was common on the West Coast during the days of sailing ships. The Willamette River runs through Portland).

We’ve recorded three albums of mostly maritime-related folk music: Weighing Anchor (1997), Tasting the Salt Air (1999), and Two-Man Crew (2004), and have a fourth in progress. We have performed at festivals, concerts, and farmers markets in Oregon and Washington.

Full Moon

I met other contradance musicians at music jams and at dances in the early ‘90’s, and a group of us formed Full Moon in 1993. Current band members besides myself are Janet Goulston, Dave Hamlin, and Fran Slefer.

Tunestruck

As often happens, you find folks who you really enjoy playing with. In this case those folks are Lori Shaffer and Jim Bell. We started playing together as ‘Jim, Lori and Gordy’ in 2008 and eventually settled on Tunestruck as a band name.
