I met Jonathan Lay in the early’90’s when we performed as part of a Work Songs of the Sea concert. We discovered we had an interest in sea chanteys and songs of the sea, so we began performing as Shanghaied on the Willamette in 1993. (Shanghaiing was common on the West Coast during the days of sailing ships. The Willamette River runs through Portland).
We’ve recorded three albums of mostly maritime-related folk music: Weighing Anchor (1997), Tasting the Salt Air (1999), and Two-Man Crew (2004), and have a fourth in progress. We have performed at festivals, concerts, and farmers markets in Oregon and Washington.
